A 4D scan is an ultrasound examination that allows you to see the face and features of your unborn baby moving in 3 dimensions and in colour. The 4th dimension is time, so you actually see your baby moving and are able to gain an incredible insight into your baby’s life in your womb.

3D is the still image of the moving 4D.

The 4D scanning process employs the same ultrasound technology used in normal 2D pregnancy scanning. The difference is that powerful computing within the ultrasound machine enables the image of your baby to be viewed in three dimensions.

Therefore 4D scanning is just as safe as the 2D process, when performed by qualified, trained staff. There are indices on our equipment that tell us the intensity of ultrasound used, and these are monitored during your examination, to keep them as low as possible, following the principle which true ultrasound professionals abide by - ALARA - as low as reasonably achievable.

A Doctor/Midwife/Obstetrician referral isn’t necessary for a 2D/4D Baby Scan. We accept self-referrals where you can book your own appointment with us. Reports can be passed on to your Midwife if required.

Our ultrasound services operate to strict safety guidelines. Since ultrasound is not an ionising radiation such as x-ray, there are also no known hazardous effects associated with multiple first line scans. BabyCare’s equipment is serviced on a regular basis and maintained on contract by specialist medical engineers. We are members of the British Medical Ultrasound Society, Society of Radiographers and registered with the Health Professions Council

The Scans

It’s not always obvious to new Mums what kind of scan they need, how long the scan will last and who they can bring along. And no, if you do not want to know the sex of your baby, we wouldn’t dream of spoiling the surprise!

Please note: BabyCare Scanning cannot be held responsible for the quality of the images/dvd. The quality of the images and dvd are dependent on factors such as foetal position, gestational age, mother’s Body Mass Index and the amount of adipose tissue, also the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding baby. These are beyond our control. Please be assured however, that we will always endeavour to obtain the best results on the day, and where possible arrange to rescan you if progress cannot be made, and is appropriate. BabyCare Scanning cannot be held responsible for the images/dvd in any way whatsoever.

Should your baby be in a poor position, and we are unable to obtain clear 4D images or confirm gender, we will first try various techniques to attempt to obtain the best image. If these are unsuccessful you may be asked to return to our seating lounge and walk around in an effort to encourage your baby to move. If baby proves uncooperative, you may be scanned a few times during the remaining clinic opening hours. If there isn’t spare time in the clinic schedule or if the clinic is closing, we will arrange for you to return another day, free of charge.

Yes we have various scans both in 2D and 4D throughout pregnancy, to address your needs as they arise. Please see our BabyCare Scans page for all our services offered.
